The Leaden Echo and the Golden Echo is one of the greatest artistic depictions of the wonder of the resurrection. Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889), an English Jesuit priest, was not only a great poet, with a unique and progressive voice, but also a profound Christian thinker. His poems are not always the most accessible, but I encourage you, as we approach Easter, to read, and re-read, slowly, meditatively, and aloud. The pay-off is huge. I’ve journeyed from near incomprehension the first time I read it, through perhaps a hundred readings over the years, to tears of joy as I read it again last weekend.
The first half of the poem exhorts us to despair, because there is no way to “keep back beauty” from “vanishing away.” (As I was looking for the text of the poem online, I discovered, poignantly, that Collin Farrell read it at Elizabeth Taylor’s funeral last month.) 
The second half turns despair on its head – in the light of the resurrection, there is One, Who is Beauty, (“beauty’s self and beauty’s giver,”) who can keep our beauty for the day of resurrection. In fact, He keeps it with “far fonder a care” than ever we can keep it. No beauty treatments, no exercise regimes, no cosmetic surgery will keep us looking young forever. But even as beauty dies in the earth, we will find, in His hands, that it has “waxed” and borne fruit “a heavy hundredfold” on the other side of death.
